March 10th-13th – The Jewelry Industry Summit (www.jewelryindustrysummit.com) is coming, paired with JA NewYork (www.ja-newyork.com) and MJSA Expo in New York (www.mjsa.org/eventsprograms/mjsa_expo) March 13th-15th. This open forum on sustainability and responsible sourcing is furthering a trend driven by both industry insiders and consumer demand that seeks accountability in all aspects of jewelry sourcing and production.
What follows are questions we have been asking ourselves in preparation for this event and where hope to participate in discussions related to platinum group metals.
- What are the most important issues related to platinum mining and production?
- What are customer expectations around sustainability and sourcing? How strongly do those expectations or convictions influence purchasing decisions?
- How ethical can sourcing be? What metrics can we use to measure progress towards this ultimate goal?
- What is the most effective way to place demands on suppliers?
- How can the industry proactively address consumer concerns?
- Is “certified fair mined” platinum a realistic goal? Should the jewelry industry push towards these standards?
We are looking forward to this “think tank” event format. It promises to deliver more in-depth discussion and exchange of ideas than a traditional presentation session. We plan to follow up after the event with both feedback and findings coming out of the summit. If you are planning on attending, we certainly look forward to seeing and discussing these important issues with you.
